Labour Mobility
What is Labour Mobility?
“Labour mobility” refers to the free movement of certified workers to practice their occupation wherever opportunities exist across Canada. Through the Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA), a regulatory authority must generally recognize the qualifications of a worker certified for the occupation in another province or territory, without requiring any additional material training, experience, examination, or assessment. In some cases, additional material requirements for specific occupations have been approved by a government and publicly posted.
The Canadian Free Trade Agreement
The CFTA facilitates the nationwide movement of people, goods, services, and investment, thus promoting an open, efficient, and stable domestic market.
It benefits Canadians, employers, and businesses by:
- improving internal trade, and
- making it easier for certified workers, such as skilled tradespeople and professionals, to practice their regulated occupation in other provinces or territories.
Why is it important?
Strengthening labour mobility supports individuals’ rights to live and work across Canada and helps employers meet labour demands.
Ensuring certified workers’ qualifications are recognized in another province or territory benefits both workers and employers. Workers have better employment opportunities and employers have a broader selection of candidates.
